VIVO 5 Plus

What we liked

  • Very well built, premium looking device - very iPhone-like looks

  • Very good display - the viewing angles are good, colour saturation is fairly decent, and sunlight legibility is good too

  • The phone has thin bezels on both sides of the display, giving it better ergonomics than many other 5.5-inch devices, and the 2.5D curved glass adds a touch of class to the whole design

  • Fast fingerprint scanner

  • Very iOS like Funtouch UI, that is done reasonably well, and has good added functionality

  • Decent overall performer - the phone remains snappy as far as non-processor intensive apps are concerned - and even games work well - although, the app load times as well as the delay while switching between apps is considerably longer than the OnePlus 3/3T

  • Has a unique dual camera setup at the front making it one of the best selfie-centric smartphones - selfie enthusiasts will definitely love the V5 Plus

  • The dual camera setup makes for a cool 'Bokeh' effect in selfies, and also enables the phone to shoot better images in low light conditions

  • Decent call quality

  • Good audio quality

  • Loud speaker output

  • Good battery life - lasts the day with moderate use

  • Supports fast charging tech that takes about 2 hours to fully charge the device

What we didn't

  • Misses out on things like USB Type-C, NFC, and Wi-Fi ac - which are generally expected at this price point

  • While overall performance is decent, it is a step behind the Snapdragon 820/821 competition like the OnePlus 3

  • Primary (rear) camera could have been better - there is an observable lack of detail, which became more evident when you see images on an external display - the camera algorithm tends to soften down the images to hide noise - especially in low light, the images are pretty ordinary

  • On the whole, the Vivo V5 Plus is a good selfie centric phone but most other things about it are overshadowed by it's top competitor - the OnePlus 3 and 3T
